5.16 Global Navigation Satellite Systems

Global navigation satellite systems (GNSS) is the generic term for worldwide radio navigation systems using satellites to provide geographic positioning. The United States Department of Defense (DOD) established the first operational GNSS in 1994 called the Navigation System with Time and Ranging (NAVSTAR) Global Positioning System. This system, now commonly called the Global Positioning System (GPS), is comprised of three segments:

  • Space segment
  • Control segment
  • User segment
