In this tutorial, you will learn how to measure distances and determine an unknown scale. You can follow along by downloading and printing the Arcata North USGS Topographic Quadrangle.

This tutorial is broken up into parts. You can navigate back and forth between Lesson 4 and this tutorial.

Learning Outcomes


Students who successfully complete this tutorial should be able to:

  • Measure distances using a graphic scale
  • Determine Distance using geographic coordinates
  • Determine an unknown scale using a reference map
