Course Text

The course text for GSP 101/GSP 101L online, Geospatial Concepts, is free and open to anyone with internet access. Additional course content will be provided in the form of online readings, online videos, and assigned news and academic journal articles.

GPS Reciever

To complete GSP 101 students need access to a GPS receiver.

The base model for the  Garmin GPSMAP 64 GPS receiver is the recommended model for this course. Students will need to have access to a GPS receiver by the 9th week of class (5th week for Extended Ed Geospatial Certificate Students).81aVMKy25gL._SL1500_

Please note: I have placed a few Garmin GPSMap64 receivers on reserve in the HSU Library.

Registered students may check out a GPS receiver for four hours at a time, which is enough to complete the course requirements.

The receivers are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

 General Technical Requirements

Online students are expected to provide for all of their own hardware and software requirements.

Online students living in the area are welcome to use any of the geospatial computer labs on campus during open lab hours. These labs include Forestry 203 and 204A, and Natural Resources 203.

Courses are also taught in these computer labs, so please be respectful. Check the schedule posted on the door before entering. Do not interrupt an ongoing class. If you arrive at the start of a class, always ask the instructor permission to use the computers if there is a class in session.

There are also computers on the first floor of the HSU library with geospatial software installed. Students may inquire at the HSU Library Help Desk for details on the current status of computers and software.

Required Hardware and Software

Online students are required to install or have access to the following software:

  • 7-Zip (7-Zip is a free, open-source file compression/decompression utility)
  • ArcGIS Desktop Student Edition (ArcGIS student licenses are available for all students currently enrolled in a geospatial class.) The instructor will provide registered students with activation codes in Canvas at the start of the semester.

Registered Students will receive an authorization number for ArcGIS Student Edition at the start of the course. This video should help students with the steps for activating the software and installing it on their computer.
